Sci Fi July begins with the first entry in the Star Trek film franchise, Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979). After a decade without a live-action version of Star Trek the crew reunite to embark on a very familiar mission: a Gene Roddenberry special where a god-like creature judges humanity to be lacking.

Our episode features interviews with story writer Alan Dean Foster, associate producer Jon Povill, and actor Walter Koenig.

A.J. Black and Trevor Gumbel join Mike to discuss the unusual path to the big screen the film took as well as how it forges a link between "TOS" and "TNG".

Correction: It was Star Trek: Voyager that lead UPN, not Star Trek: The Next Generation (which was syndicated).

Episode 556: Swept Away (1974)

Samm Deighan and Trevor Gumbel join Mike to discuss Lina Wertmüller’s 1974 film, Swept Away. Also known as Overwhelmed by an Unusual Fate in the Blue Sea of August, it’s the story of Gennarino (Giancarlo Giannini) and Rafaella (Mariangela Melato). She’s a bourgeoisie on vacation with her husband who has nothing good to say about anything, especially the service on her yacht which Gennarino provides. They get separated from the ship and end up on a deserted island where they fight to survive and fight with one another.

We'll be discussing the Guy Ritchie remake as well as Marco Ferreri's 1972 film La Cagna which shares some similarities with Wertmuller's film.

We are kicking off a month of shows discussing the Cinema Novo movement from Brazil with a look at Nelson Pereira dos Santos's 1963 film Vidas Secas. Also known as Barren Lives, the film is based on a 1938 novel by Graciliano Ramos. It’s the story of a family trying to survive in the scraggly countryside of Northeast Brazil. We join them as they search for a place to live, a way to put food on their table, and how to make enough money to buy a leather bed.

Chris Stachiw and Trevor Gumbel join Mike to unpack this "first wave" Cinema Novo film.

Released in 1976, The First Nudie Musical stars Stephen Nathan as Harry Schecther, a down on his luck filmmaker who's reluctantly entered the world of pornography to keep his father’s studio solvent. He gets the bright idea to shoot a musical and, at the behest of his backers, a nudie musical at that. With the help of his assistant, Rosie (Cindy Williams) and without the help of the wet-behind-the-ears director foisted upon him, John Smithee (writer/co-director Bruce Kimmel), we see the production of Come, Come Now the titular first nudie musical.

Angela Mac and Trevor Gumbel join Mike to discuss this fun-filled film.
