Episode 716: The Woman on the Beach (1947)

We continue #Noirvember 2024 with a look at Jean Renoir's The Woman on the Beach.  Released in 1947, the film tells the tale of veteran Scott Burnett (Roobert Ryan).  He’s plagued with nightmares caused by his PTSD and is assigned to the mounted division of the Coast Guard where he patrols the beach on his horse, meeting the comely Peggy Butler (Joan Bennett).  She’s married to blind painter Tod Butler (Charles Bickford).  All three of them are plagued by "ghosts" from their past.

Episode 619: Rules of the Game (1939)

French Month continues with a look at Jean Renoir's Rules of the Game. Released originally in 1939, the film was based on Alfred de Musset's Les Caprices de Marianne and skewers French nobility in a comedy of manners. Released on the eve of World War II, the film was not a hit cut down to a mere 86 minute running time. It would later be expanded another 20 minutes in a version that not even Renoir had ever seen.

Episode 318: La Grande Illusion (1937)

Set during World War One, Jean Renoir's La Grande Illusion (1937) stars Jean Gabin as Lt. Marechal, an airman who, along with Captain Boeldieu (Pierre Fresnay), are shot down by Captain Rauffenstein, who’s played by Erich von Stroheim. The two Frenchmen then spend most of the rest of the film in POW camps, primarily Hallbach and Wintersborn where they meet an array of fellow prisoners.

Tom Jennings and Ken Stanley join Mike to discuss this humanist film.
