#Czechtember2021 continues with a look at Václav Vorlícek's Girl on a Broomstick (1972), the story of a young witch (Petra Cernocká) who would rather escape to the world of human beings than be stuck in detention for 300 years(!).
Gil Kenan and Kat Ellinger join Mike to discuss the film while author Hermína Franková (and her granddaughter, Hana Frank) discuss the writing of the original story and the 2019 musical version.
#Czechember2020 continues with a look at Juraj Herz's Morgiana. Released in 1972 the film stars Iva Janzurova as both Victoria and Clara Tragen, two sisters who are driven apart by their father’s will and the jealousy of Clara by Victoria.
We’ve talked about Herz in the past including his incredible film The Cremator. And, for as subversive as that film was, it was Morgiana that got him into more trouble.
Released in 1972, Andrei Tarkovsky's Solaris is the second of three adaptations of Stanislav Lem's 1961 book of the same name. The film tells the tale of Kris Kelvin (Donatas Banionis) who travels to a station orbiting the planet Solaris, a sentient ocean that seems to be able to read the unconscious thoughts of those on the station and conjure up living embodiments of someone from the astronauts' past, with varying results.
Special Guests: Robert Hooks, John D. F. Black, Mary Black Guest Co-Hosts: Heather Drain, Maurice Bursztynski
Black History Month 2019 continues with a look at the 1972 film directed by Ivan Dixon and written by John D. F. Black, Trouble Man . Robert Hooks stars as cool cat Mr. T. That’s T that rhymes with P and this cat is great at pool. He does his business out of a billiards parlor where he holds court like a Sicilian on the day of his daughter’s wedding. Mr. T runs afoul a plot hatched by Chalky and Pete (Ralph Waite & Paul Winfield), a salt and pepper team of criminals who put T on the outs with Big (Julius Harris) and the cops.
