Episode 496: The Phynx (1970)

Lee H. Katzin's The Phynx (1970) is a story of espionage, intrigue, rock and roll, and the generational divide. It's about a fake rock band, the titular Phynx, who are sent on the road to infiltrate Albania whose evil government has been kidnapping America's elderly celebrities.

Episode 275: Some Call It Loving (1973)

When Robert Troy (Zalman King) buys a "sleeping beauty" (Tisa Farrow) at a carnival and introduces her to the playscape of fantasy roleplay in which he lives every day, things don't necessarily work out in Some Call it Loving, a beautiful and unusual film from 1973.

Writer/director James B. Harris discusses the genesis of the film as well as his work with Stanley Kubrick on The Killing, Paths of Glory, One-Eyed Jacks, and more. He also compares the volatility of Timothy Carey to Richard Pryor.

Heather Drain and The Hollywood Outsider's Aaron Peterson join Mike in discussing the film as well as other interpretations of the Sleeping Beauty tale.

Episode 166: Boss Nigger (1974)

Special Guest: Fred "The Hammer" Williamson

Boss Nigger is one of the American Westerns that used the feel of the Euro-westerns that came to the fore in the mid-1960s, but with an African-American twist. The film stars Fred "The Hammer" Williamson as "Boss" and D'Urville Martin as "Amos" – two bounty hunters who become sheriff and deputy of a small western town. The twosome battles bad guys, civic corruption and racism with words and guns.

Our special guest co-host this week is David Walker of Badazz Mofo.

Episode 153: Hit! (1973)

We're looking at the 1973 action film HIT! from director Sidney J. Furie. The film stars Billy Dee Williams as federal agent Nick Allen. When Nick's sister takes a hot shot, he goes on the warpath for the people that put the smack on the streets. Rather than dealing with two bit hustlers and thugs, Nick takes it all the way to the source, making a real French Connection with a group of drug kingpins in Marseilles.

We're joined by filmmaker Daniel Kremer who's writing Furie's biography.
