Writer, director, and star Joanna Arnow delivers one of the sharpest, most quietly uncomfortable comedies of recent years with The Feeling That the Time for Doing Something Has Passed (2023), a film that weaponizes awkwardness, deadpan humor, and emotional stasis. Arnow plays Ann, a thirty-three-year-old woman drifting through New York City, desperate for connection but seemingly incapable of advocating for herself. She works a job that barely registers as meaningful, endures social interactions that feel transactional at best, and navigates a BDSM relationship that has quietly slipped from consensual ritual into something emotionally hollow.

Lisa Vandever and Keith Gordon join Mike to unpack Arnow’s deceptively modest narrative and the precision with which it captures a very modern kind of paralysis.

He fancies himself an underground filmmaker and Lothario. The film follows him on his exploits as he navigates life, women, and the scene in 1970s New York.

We continue Black History Month with the 1980 film from director J. Terrance Mitchell, Get Rollin'! It’s the story of three very colorful people and their lives in and around a roller rink in Brooklyn; Vinnie Vinzerrelli of the "Jigaboo Jammers", Pat The Cat, and Inez Daniels. At some point the film becomes less of a documentary and more of a drama about Vinzerrelli ‎ and Pat the Cat taking their roller boogie skills to England.

Filmmakers Benjamin Buxton (On the Rink) and Leon Chase (Suzy Hotrod: Roller Derby Star) join Mike to discuss rollerskating, Brooklyn in the late '70s, and more.

We’re kicking off “Maudit May” with a discussion of Orson Welles’s The Other Side of the Wind. A film some fifty years in the making, it has yet to be completed and released.

The film stars John Huston as Jake Hannaford, an aging film director who is working on an artsy fartsy film to try to stay relevant with New Hollywood. Most of the film takes place on Hannaford’s seventieth birthday where he’s surrounded by sycophants, critics, friends and former friends. Populated by a star-studded cast, the film is a treatise on filmmaking, aging, and machismo.

Episode 21: Traxx (1988)

Chili flavored cookies anyone? This week the guys look back at this vastly forgotten and ahead of it's time not-on-DVD action spoof only from the mind of Dino De Laurentiis. A truly weird oddity of the VHS era.

Written by Gary DeVore and directed by Jerome Gary, Traxx (1988 ) stars Shadoe Stevens as the titular action hero who comes to a town beleaguered by baddies (including Robert Davi as Aldo Palucci). He cleans up crime with gusto, verve, and an endless amount of bullets. But Traxx really wants to give up his live as a one-man army to become the next Famous Amos.

Recipe:
Mike's TRAXX Chilli Con Cookie Recipe

1 1/4 cups flour
1/2 to 3/4 teaspoon ancho chili powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup softened butter
3/4 cup sugar
1 egg
2 tablespoons sugar mixed with 2 teaspoons cinnamon

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Sift together flour, chili powder and salt on paper and set aside. Beat butter with electric mixer for 1 minute until creamy. Add sugar and beat until light in color, 3 to 4 minutes. Scrape down sides of bowl. Add egg and beat 1 minute. Add the sifted ingredients and mix in. Refrigerate dough until firm, at least 30 minutes. Scoop cookies with 1-ounce scoop or rounded tablespoon onto ungreased pans. Bake 6 minutes, then turn and bake 5 minutes more. Let cool for a few minutes, then sprinkle with cinnamon sugar mixture. Finish the cookies and turn on Shadoe Stevens in TRAXX. Enjoy!
