Our appreciation of 1969 continues with our second look at an adaptation of Edogawa Rampo’s work, Blind Beast. Directed by Yasuzô Masumura, the film stars Mako Midori as Aki Shima, a model, and Eiji Funakoshi as Michio, a blind sculptor who becomes obsessed with her. He and his mother kidnap Aki and keep her in his warehouse studio where the two become engaged in a game of cat and mouse as he tries to create a new form of art that only the blind can appreciate.
Coffin Jon and Elric Kane join Mike to discuss the film specifically and Masumura's work generally.

This week we're looking at Naosuke Kurosawa's 1980 Japanese Roman Porno film Zoom In: Sex Apartments (AKA Zoom In: Rape Apartments/Zûmu in: Bôkô danchi). The film tells the tale of a young married woman (Erina Miyai) who gets raped on the way to visit an old flame. The assault appears to be a part of a series of similar rapes and gruesome murders taking place in an apartment block. The film is visually striking and seems inspired by Dario Argento's 1970s giallo films.
We're joined once again by VCinema's Coffin Jon to talk about pinku eiga, roman porno, and more.
The opening film in the epic tale of loyalty and betrayal amongst post-war Yakuza, Fukasaku's Battles without Honor and Humanity was a cynical look at Japanese society.

Akira Kurosawa'sHigh & Low is one of his many reworkings of Western culture through Eastern eyes. This time it's the Ed McBain's pulpy King's Ransom that is turned into a taut noir thriller that takes viewers from the stately estates to the squalid sewers.
Joining Mike & Mondo Justin is VCinema's Coffin Jon.
