We wrap up Comedy Month with a look at Phil Joanou's 1987 film Three O'Clock High. Based on a screenplay by Richard Christian Matheson and Tom Szollosi, the film stars Casey Siemaszko as Jerry Marshall, a dweeby high school student that runs awry of new student and general malcontent Buddy Revell (Richard Tyson).

Tim and Agatha Luz join Mike to discuss how the film is an exercise in style which sets it apart from other typical high school movie fare.

This series will be at least eight parts which include three parts reading, three parts discussion, at least one interview, and a discussion of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.

Episode 525: Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977)

Sci-Fi Month continues with a look at Steven Spielberg's 1977 film Close Encounters of the Third Kind. It’s really three stories in one. In the first it’s former cartographer David Laughlin (Bob Balaban) who’s been recruited to help French scientist Claude Lacombe (Francois Truffaut) investigate a strange series of alien visitations. The second concerns Julian Guiler (Melinda Dillon) whose little boy, Barry, is kidnapped by aliens. And, the third follows Roy Neary (Richard Dreyfuss), a man who’s disillusioned with his life until he witnesses a group of alien ships which plant an image in his head as kind of an invitation to join them.

Suzen Tekla Kruglnska and El Goro join Mike to discuss this landmark film. Interviews include production designer Joe Alves, screenwriter Matthew Robbins, second assistant director Jim Bloom, and special effects supervisor Douglas Trumbull.

Screenwriter Carl Gottlieb (The Jaws Log) and John LeMay (Jaws Unmade) discuss the making of Jaws as well as the many sequels, rip-offs, and inspired films in Jaws's wake.

We conclude the second part of our conversation about Philip K. Dick adaptations with a conversation about Minority Report (2002). Believe it or not but this is the first time we’ve directly discussed a film directed by Steven Spielberg on the show! The film stars Tom Cruise as John Anderton, the chief of the country’s first pre-crime division where he and his team arrest people before they commit the crimes prognosticated by a trio of psychics. When the psychics pick him as the perpetrator of an impending murder, Anderton begins to question the validity of the pre-crime system.

Tim and Corinne Luz of the Cinemaspection podcast join Mike to discuss the film. Screenwriter Scott Frank talks about his work on the film as well as his work on The Wolverine, Logan, The Lookout, Hoke, The Queen's Gambit, and more.

Directed by Robert Zemeckis, Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988) is based very loosely on a book by Gary K. Wolf. It tells the tale of hard-boiled detective Eddie Valiant (Bob Hoskins) who gets hired by the head of a movie studio, R.K. Maroon, to take some photos of our titular Roger Rabbit’s wife (Kathleen Turner) playing patty cake with the head of a place called Toontown. Produced by Steven Spielberg, it’s a story of intrigue, murder, and animation.

Chris Stachiw (Kuture Shocked) and Axel Kohagen (Super True Stories) join Mike to discuss the film, the proposed sequel, and Gary K. Wolf's original book.
