Episode 84: Shadow of a Doubt (1943)

Special Guest: Tania Modleski

One of Hitchcock's favorite films, Shadow of a Doubt stars Joseph Cotten as Uncle Charlie -- the savior of his sister's Santa Rosa family... or is he?

We talk about Shadow of a Doubt and its remakes from Step Down to Terror to The Return of Dracula to the 1991 TV remake (directed by Karen Arthur).

  1. One of my favourite Hitchcock films as I discuss in my Ludovico review here.

I'm always amazed at the extent to which Mike White prepares for these epic episodes although in this instance, I don't believe the discussion ever fully centres on what most resonates about the film for me, that Shadow of a Doubt is perhaps Hitchcock's most cynical and scathing commentary on the corruption and conformity of (at the time) contemporary American middle class existence.

Nevertheless, all sorts of surprising thematic nooks and crannies are unearthed on this episode, including a discussion of the remakes, the radio play and the theory that Uncle Charlie is a vampire.
