Episode 651: The Keep (1983)

Episode 651: The Keep (1983) Special Guests: Hawk Koch, F. Paul Wilson, Ivo Ritzer
Guest Co-Hosts: John Walker, Jedidiah Ayres

Jedidiah Ayres and John Walker join Mike to look at Michael Mann's moody supernatural film The Keep. Released in 1983, the film is a real who’s who of actors including Jürgen Prochnow as a German captain, Gabriel Byrne as a Nazi SS Major, Ian McKellan as a disabled scholar, and Scott Glenn as an ancient being on the side of light. All of them eventually make their way to the titular Keep deep in the Romanian Carpathians.

Also joining us are Professor Ivo Ritzer who discusses his essay about The Keep and Manhunter in The Philosophy of Michael Mann, producer Hawk Koch, and the author of The Keep, .

Episode 528: The Great Silence (1968)

Guest Co-Hosts: Maitland McDonagh, Ivo Ritzer

Spaghetti Western month continues with a look at Sergio Corbucci's The Great Silence (1968) which stars Jean-Louis Trintingant as the titular Silence, a mute gunfighter who shoots the thumbs off his enemies. He's pitted against the appropriately named Loco (Klaus Kinski) in a snow-bound Utah town in one of the most nihilistic films you may enjoy.

Maitland McDonagh and Professor Ivo Ritzer join Mike to discuss the film and, unfortunately, discuss how it still has such a powerful resonance even today.
