Episode 554: A Clockwork Orange (1971)

We kick off 2022 with a look at Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange (1971). Based on the 1962 book by , the film stars Malcolm McDowell as Alex DeLarge, a teenager in the squalor of a futuristic London town where there ain’t no law & order. He’s a juvenile delinquent who eventually gets pinched for his crimes. While in prison he undergoes an experimental treatment that removes his free will but puts him on the straight and narrow only to find that all those he stepped on on his path to incarceration remember him... and not too fondly.

Episode 472: Pink Narcissus (1971)

James Bidgood's Pink Narcissus (1971) is a wordless film which tells the story of a young hustler (Bobby Kendall) who engages in a series of fantasies throughout an evening. The film was shot on 8mm but still presents a lush, fantastic color palette and incredible sets that are even more incredible when the viewer remembers that this was all shot in Bidgood's Hell's Kitchen apartment.

Maitland McDonagh and David Kittredge join Mike to discuss lyrical pornography, New York real estate, and the importance of finishing projects.

Episode 471: Viva La Muerte (1971)

Fernando Arrabal's 1971 film Viva la Muerte. The film tells the story of Fando (Mahdi Chaouch), a young man, whose mother sold out his father to the fascists during the Spanish Civil War. This was the feature directorial debut of Arrabal who, along with Roland Topor and Alejandro Jodorowsky, began the Panic Movement.

Jess Byard and Heather Drain join Mike to discuss film movements, surrealism, and Arrabal's work.

Episode 287: Straw Dogs (1971)

No stranger to controversy, Sam Peckinpah's Straw Dogs (1971) examines the nature of man, marriage, and more. The film stars Dustin Hoffman as David Sumner, a mathematician who moves to the south of England with his native wife, Amy (Susan George) where he upsets the status quo. The situation erupts in violence and terror.

Maitland McDonagh and Eric J. Peterson join Mike to discuss Peckinpah's film as well as Rod Lurie's 2011 remake. A few Turkish remakes are also compared to the original and U.S. remake.

The author of the book Straw Dogs was based on, The Siege at Trencher's Farm, Gordon Williams, and the author of If They Move... Kill 'Em!, David Weddle, discuss the background of the film.
