Episode 608: The Ice Pirates (1984)

Episode 608: Ice Pirates (1984) Special Guests: Stewart Raffill, Bruce Vilanch
Guest Co-Hosts: Duane Swierczynski, Chris Stachiw

We’re discussing the 1984 film from Stewart Raffill, The Ice Pirates, which stars Robert Urich as Jason and Michael D. Rhodes as Roscoe. They’re two of titular Ice Pirates, intergalactic privateers who try to rob the ships of the Templars of their most precious cargo, Ice. Fresh water is at a premium and government overreach is at a maximum. Along with more of their crew and some really awful robots, the ice pirates cross paths with Mary Crosby as Princess Karina who eventually gives them a quest to find the mysterious Seventh Water where the water flows like wine...

Duane Swierczynski and Chris Stachiw join Mike to take a trip down memory lane with this film while writer/director Stewart Raffill and Bruce Vilanch shed light on the making of this space adventure/comedy.

  1. I love it when you surprise me like this Mike, just happened to watch the film for the first time a few days ago. It was an absolute blast so it does work outside of nostalgia, I then tracked down Spacehunter which lacks the gags and charm and now have The Man Who Saved the World on the backburner.

    Great episode as always.

  2. 2 1/2 hours on ICE PIRATES... Salut, Gentlemen!
It's not a great movie, but it's hard to hate it for all the little touches - kung-fu robot fighting and the time-warp sequence put one in a very forgiving mood...
Someone not mentioned is Stanford Sherman, who apparently originated the script and gives a clue as to what ICE PIRATES could've been without all the comedy and more money spent - KRULL, which came out the year before and which Sherman also wrote. It's also a sci-fi mishmash with medieval vibes, but not nearly as jokey - and also has a cult following.
Yeah, there's some stock footage of LOGAN'S RUN, as well as ROLLERBALL - helps to have access to a good film library when ya gotta keep the costs down...
For Chris - the STAR TREK vibe you mention - the episode 'Friday's Child' and possibly 'The Squire of Gothos' for the swashbuckling fight at the end.
Frog Lady - Patty Maloney, who was the female equivalent of Billy Barty; got costumed up for a lot of Sid & Marty Kroft shows like Billy. And still alive, unlike Billy.
