You speculated on the podcast about how well known this is to a UK audience. Well, I would have been 11 or 12 when the TV show was on, and 15/16 for the film. I was pretty interested in politics even as an 11 year old, so would probably have been well up for something like this.
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I can say that as far as I can recall, it never even crossed my radar back then. I have no memory of it whatsoever. I don't remember anyone talking about it ever, in all the intervening years. I would say it has no place in the national memory, like say Spitting Image or 'Have I Got News For You' does. Same for the film.
And really, having watched the series and the film before listening to this, that makes perfect sense and I'd be very happy for it to stay that way. I don't think it works even on the basis of 'quirky 80s British humour'. Everything feels like it missed the mark.
