We conclude Art House August with a look at Jean-Pierre Melville's Army of Shadows (1969). Based loosely on Joseph Kessel's memoir about the French Resistance in World War II, the film stars Lino Ventura as Phillipe Gerbier, one of a handful of Resistance fighters we meet as we travel through the underworld, striking out at the German occupiers and those loyal to the Vichy government.
Special Guest: Miles Chapin Guest Co-Hosts: Kat Ellinger, Heather Drain
Heather Drain and Kat Ellinger join Mike to discuss Billy Wilder’s Buddy Buddy (1981). The movie is yet another pairing of Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon. This time they’re filling the shoes of Lino Ventura and Jacques Brel in this remake of Edouard Molinaro’s L'Emmerdeur.
Matthau plays Trabucco, a ruthless hitman, while Lemmon plays Victor Clooney, a milquetoast whose wife left him three months prior. Naturally they get thrown together in the unlikeliest of circumstances and hilarity ensues.
The episode features an interview with Miles Chapin and a loving tribute to Klaus Kinski.
Shocktober 2021 continues with a look at Jack Gold’s The Medusa Touch (1978). It’s the story of John Morlar (Richard Burton) a man with a special gift who is "murdered" in the first few minutes of the film. It then becomes an investigation by Detective Brunel (Lino Ventura ) who tries to learn more about Morlar, who murdered him, and why.
Agatha Luz and Jeff Meyers join Mike to discuss psychic films, "dogs" of 1978, and more.
