Episode 144: The Brain that Wouldn't Die (1962)

Special Guests: Jon Gillespie, Tom Sivak
& Kevin Frei

Is The Brain that Wouldn't Die a schlock classic or a treatise on unfettered male desire? Why not both?

We spoke to not one but three people who have worked on musical adaptations of the film (The Brain that Wouldn't Die: A New Musical, The Brain that Wouldn't Die: In 3-D!, and Head: The Musical).

We're joined by Professor Kevin Heffernan, author of Ghouls, Gimmicks, and Gold: Horror Films and the American Movie Business, 1953–1968.

The paths of podcasts twist and turn through mountains of miscalculations and often lose themselves in error and darkness!

  1. What should have been an enjoyable episode ruined by so much Mengele-related psychobabble.

  3. I really like the attitude you guys have regarding films shown on MST3K; Being able to enjoy both the MST3K episode and the films viewed proper. A lot of cult/horror fans looks down on MST3K, and a lot of MST3K/Rifftrax fans are very dismissive of horror & cult classics.

This ep's definitely prompted me to watch TBTWD proper (I've had the Synapse DVD sitting on my unwatched pile for ages!).

  5. The commentator here that said he saw this as a kid; and was stunned by the gore is baffling me. I saw this in the early 1980s on a local station at 2 AM : gore-less (edited). Then when the Psychotronic Film Book came out in 1983; Michael Weldon had discovered newly produced VHS copies WITH the gore intact (which was TOTALLY new to him in 1983). And he was mainly speaking of the bloody arm at the end. SIDEBAR: In the late 1990s , I was lucky enough to attend a screening of "The Brain.." with Joseph Green as a guest with a Q & A ! I'm in NY state and he lived upstate at the time.
