  1. What a treat! I am a fan of "Shock Treatment and found this podcast through IMDb. I like the variety of segments and the interviews are a pleasant surprise. This is my first listen, but I'll be back for more!

Hey guys (well, Mike, since Justin is out),

This is one of my favorite episodes of the show because it convinced me to finally see the damn flick. The trailer was awful and nonsensical and they kept promising the sequel to Rocky Horror (which I wasn't too big of a fan of to begin with) so I just skipped the movie. After this episode, I caved in and couldn't have been more pleased with the film. At first I wasn't sure what the movie was going for and then it sucked me in with great satire, intentional stylized kitsch, sexy mrs Harper, playful cast who enjoyed themselves throughout, catchy smart songs, 80s music video quality and prophetic vision of the future.

There was so much here to help advertise the movie as a standalone film and a new vision of the creator of Rocky Horror. Of course people got severely disappointed when this was presented to them as a RHPS sequel.

Next to maybe Cabaret and All that Jazz, this may be among my top 3 favorite musicals, a genre which I generally dislike.

Brad Jones (The Cinemasnob) did a review of the movie the other day and your podcast was the first thing that came to my mind when it comes to supplemental material.

  3. Thanks! I posted his review. I always like what he does, even though I hate the poster images he uses on his YouTube videos. LOL.

  4. I'm a big fan of Rocky Horror - although I'm not a fan whatsoever of the spectacle it involved into with all the audience participation. I'd love to see it on the big screen just once without the obnoxious hoopla, rice throwing and shout-backs.

It's strange. I just don't think audiences know how to enjoy the film on its own terms. They know it's entertaining and the music is brilliant but they just can't seem to engage it on straight on - they have to conjour up all of those noisy post-modernist reactions in order to give them a 'way in.'

But like many fans of the movie, I'm not a fan of the "sequel." (And I say sequel in quotes because it barely qualifies). I've only seen it the one time so perhaps it may have aged more kindly than I remember but I'm with Mondo Justin on this one (who is beside himself on this episode with confusion as to why Mike White picked the film to discuss.)

It was a pleasure to hear the amazing Jessica Harper discuss the film (and her cookbook) but what the hell went on with Cliff DeYoung? I can only surmise that you'd irritated with that last question, Mike. It's really strange how he just says goodbye and then gets off the phone so abruptly. I would classify that as a bona-fide 'interview hang up!'

I'm not sure this episode turned me around on the film but if I ever decide to revisit, I'll let you know what I think.
