Chris Stachiw (The Kulturecast), Richard Hatem (Titans, Under Siege 2), and I joined forces to talk about the classic holiday specials from Arthur Rankin Jr. and Jules Bass. This will be a short-lived series of five or six episodes over the holidays in 2020, though we might return in 2021...
Here's a slightly different take on Hermie, as I was a small child when this first hit TV and watched it every year. My liberal parents had a lot of gay friends and it never occurred to any of them that Hermie was coded as gay. They all thought Hermie was being coded as Jewish. Back then, Hermie was a name most associated with Jewish men, dentistry was associated with Jewish men and the Jewish kids always felt left out at Christmas. While Christmas was on the way to becoming more secular than religious back then, it was still mostly religious.
