Episode 418: Total Recall (1990)

We’re kicking off back to back discussions of adaptations with a look at 1990's Total Recall. Directed by Paul Verhoeven, the film spent years in turnaround until was attached and got the thing made. It's the story of a common construction worker who dreams of life on Mars. When he learns of a procedure that can implant memories of being on Mars, things get a little complicated.

Rob St. Mary and Jedidiah Ayres join Mike to discuss the complicated road which Total Recall took to get to the silver screen as well as the wretched Len Wiseman remake and the strange television spin-off. Screenwriter reveals how he helped shape the film to make it the success it ultimately became.

Samm Deighan and Bill Ackerman join Mike to discuss The Fly. Released in 1986, David Cronenberg’s film stars Jeff Goldblum as scientist Seth Brundle, a man who meets a journalist, Veronica Quaife (Geena Davis). The film tells the tale of their relationship as they get together and become driven apart after an accident changes Brundle irreparably.

Special guests are Emma Westwood, author of the Devil's Advocates book on The Fly and producer Stuart Cornfeld who discusses his work on The Fly as well as Tropic Thunder, Mimic, and more.

Episode 320: eXistenZ (1999)

eXistenZ, the 1999 film from writer/director David Cronenberg stars Jennifer Jason Leigh as Allegra Geller, a game designer who has been marked for death by a faction known as the “Realists”. After an assassination attempt she escapes with her ineffectual bodyguard, a PR nerd named Ted Pikull played by Jude Law. The pair eventually test out Allegra’s new game, eXistenZ, in order to make sure her biomass game pod is still functional. From there the film traverses many layers of game play, making viewers question what’s real and what’s part of play.
